Cabaceira Grande community restores mangrove ecosystems with support from the Futuro Azul project

Apr 29, 2025 |

The community of Cabaceira Grande, located near Ilha de Moçambique, Nampula Province, has started a community mangrove planting initiative, aimed at restoring environmentally degraded areas.

The activity, which also seeks to promote biodiversity conservation and strengthen sustainable management practices for coastal ecosystems, is part of the Blue Future project, an initiative coordinated by the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) Mozambique and co-financed by three international organisations: Blue Action Fund, Oceans 5 and the Marine Conservation Action Project (MACP). It is being carried out with the technical support of the ADPP Mozambique team.

The mangrove, considered one of the most important ecosystems for coastal protection and marine biodiversity, has been threatened by both human activities and climate impacts. Recovering these areas is a crucial step towards guaranteeing the resilience of local communities and the sustainability of the natural resources on which they depend.

According to ADPP Mozambique, the initiative stands out for the active participation of community members, who play a central role in the ecological restoration process, reinforcing the link between local development and environmental conservation. By encouraging the direct involvement of the population, the Blue Future project seeks to create lasting environmental awareness and promote community ownership of actions to protect the natural heritage.
