Dr Fridtjof Nansen scientific mission identifies more than a thousand whales between Ponta do Ouro and Sofala

Sep 8, 2026 |

A scientific campaign aboard the Norwegian vessel Dr Fridtjof Nansen has already recorded more than a thousand humpback whales during its mission on the Mozambican coast this year.

Segundo a Cruising with Dr. Fridtjof Nansenwhich follows the progress of the expedition, the survey covers more than two thousand kilometres of coastline, between Ponta do Ouro in the far south and the Sofala Bank in the centre of the country, with the aim of mapping the presence of whales and other marine fauna.

Every southern winter, humpback whales leave their feeding grounds in the Southern Ocean and head for the warmer waters of the western Indian Ocean, where they mate and raise their calves.

The same source states that Mozambican observer Carlos Bento is part of the expedition, and that he has also recorded other species such as dolphins, seabirds and dugongs sighted along the route.

The initiative is the result of a partnership between Mozambique's Institute for Marine and Fisheries Research, the EAF-Nansen Programme of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and Norway's Institute of Marine Research, as reported by KAMBAKU at the start of the expedition..

The data collected, which includes photographs and GPS coordinates, is expected to strengthen knowledge of the country's marine biodiversity and support future coastal planning and conservation decisions.
