Mar 5, 2024 |

The 3rd session of PROMOVE Biodiversidade's National Supervisory Committee was held in Maputo to analyse the programme's implementation in protected areas in Nampula and Zambézia, specifically in the Gilé National Park (PNAG), the Primeiras and Segundas Islands Environmental Protection Area (APAIPS) and Mount Mabu.

Funded by the European Union (EU), PROMOVE Biodiversidade is a programme under the responsibility of the Biodiversity Conservation Foundation (BIOFUND) and the National Administration of Conservation Areas (ANAC) and its main aim is to strengthen the institutions involved in biodiversity management and directly support the local communities in those regions.

Led by the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Land and Environment, Emília Dique Fumo, the meeting was attended by various individuals such as the interim director of ANAC, the executive director of Biofund and representatives of the European Union in Maputo. Also present were administrators of the conservation areas benefiting from the project, directors of provincial and district environmental services, as well as implementing partners.

The main aim of the National Supervisory Committee, which meets annually, is to share information on the progress of activities, identify challenges and assess the impact of the actions carried out in the beneficiary areas. During the event, the results achieved in 2023 were highlighted, including the full operation of a radio communication system to improve surveillance and operations in the PNAG, the demarcation of the park's southern boundary and training and support initiatives for local producers.

In addition, research results were presented on the impact of fires, the reintroduction of fauna and issues related to population growth and early birth in young people from local communities.

One of the highlights of the meeting was the delimitation of the proposed Conservation Area and the mapping of points of cultural interest on Mount Mabu, with a view to promoting sustainable tourism in the region. These actions are fundamental to guaranteeing the preservation of biodiversity and the sustainable economic development of local communities.

This meeting represented an important opportunity to exchange knowledge and experiences, boosting sustainable development and biodiversity conservation in the provinces of Zambézia and Nampula.
