Mbamba's Trench, an impressive 4,042-meter structure hand-dug by 200 members of the local community, celebrates four years of existence and success in protecting both people and wildlife.
During this period, the infrastructure has achieved the dual objectives of ensuring the safety of Mbamba's residents and enabling peaceful coexistence while safeguarding the fauna of the Niassa Special Reserve.
According to the Niassa Lion Project, the construction of Mbamba's Trench was a collective effort, with 25% of the funding coming directly from the local community and the remainder provided by conservation organizations.
Over the years, this colossal structure has proven to be an insurmountable barrier for a variety of wildlife, including elephants, buffaloes, hippos, lions, leopards, and many others. The fact that even the most powerful predators avoid the trench is a testament to its effectiveness.
Mbamba's Trench is not just a protective shield; it is also a catalyst for the village's economic development. Within its boundaries, residents can cultivate fruits and vegetables freely, without fear of wildlife attacks. This has led to a significant expansion of agricultural activities in the area, contributing to the community's food security.

Despite the success of Mbamba's Trench, there are challenges to overcome. The structure has three road access gates that need to be protected at night to prevent animal entry. Additionally, the village's next major priority is to ensure access to water within the village itself, eliminating the need to fetch water from a river one kilometer away. Water safety is vital for the Mbamba community, and efforts are underway to make this secure access a reality.
Mbamba's Trench is an inspiring example of how cooperation between the community and conservation organizations can result in significant benefits for all involved. Four years of experience demonstrate that peaceful coexistence between human communities and wildlife is possible.
