The Biodiversity Conservation Foundation (BIOFUND) is investing more than 8.5 billion meticais, the equivalent of 135 million dollars, in 74 biodiversity conservation projects in Mozambique.
The information was released during a seminar organised by the Zambezi Agency at the 59th edition of FACIM. Jéssica Julaia, a BIOFUND representative, explained, segundo RM e o Diário Económicoaccording to RM and Diário Económico, that these initiatives involve the participation of more than 60,000 people, mainly in buffer areas of national parks, where the impact of environmental preservation is more significant for local communities.
In order to facilitate the progress of the projects, BIOFUND will make a first instalment of funding available in the next few days, to the value of 6.3 billion meticais (100 million dollars). This support aims to ensure that the projects can begin to be implemented quickly and effectively.
According to DE, the importance of biodiversity for sustainable development in Mozambique was also discussed in July 2023, during the conference ‘SDGs and ESG Indices in Mozambique: Challenges and Opportunities for Companies and National Organisations’. Sean Nazerali, Director of Innovative Financing at BIOFUND, emphasised that biodiversity is essential for the country's economic and social growth. Nazerali emphasised that the protection of natural ecosystems is directly linked to urban development and the fight against poverty, demonstrating how environmental conservation can contribute to the growth of large cities.
BIOFUND's strategy is aligned with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), promoting both the preservation of the environment and the improvement of the quality of life of the communities involved. By investing in conservation projects, the foundation seeks to ensure that Mozambique's biodiversity remains protected, benefiting both the ecosystems and the populations that depend on them for their livelihoods.
